The story opens by establishing that strange creatures, secret treasures, and unexplored places exist in the world, and that Hunters are the people drawn to such mysteries. On Whale Island, young Gon sits in a tree with his fishing rod, determined to catch the legendary Monster of the Swamp. Before he leaves, his mother Mito urges him to always do what he himself believes is right, and warns that some people treat danger itself as entertainment. Gon boards a ship bound for the Hunter Exam, driven by his wish to find his father Ging.
